Don’t just declutter, de-own.” – Joshua Becker

When I started looking around my home and cringing at all the oversized furniture and toys lying around, I knew I needed to make a change. It was time to start decluttering.
The word sounded great and so did the concept but I honestly had no idea where to begin. What room do I start in? How much should I get rid of? What supplies do I need?
Do you know where all of this information and so much more can be found? Within the pages of a good book.
I don’t know about you but whenever I am thinking of trying something new or am looking for inspiration, I always reach for a book. On the good days, the bad days and all the days in between, you can find me blocking out the world and digging into a book.
This decluttering process was no different! I can’t even tell you how much I learned and gained inspiration from the books that I read about minimalism, decluttering and organizing. They gave me direction, helped me figure out my why for decluttering and got me even more excited for the process.
Before you begin going through your home and your life, I want to share with you five of the best books about decluttering. Read one, or all of them, and I promise you that by the time you are done reading you will feel more prepared to tackle the clutter that is in front of you!
The Minimalist Home by Joshua Becker
Hands down the best book I have read about decluttering and transforming your home into a place that you love! Creator and author of the amazing blog Becoming Minimalist, Joshua Becker walks you step by step through the decluttering process. He takes you on a tour of your home, room to room, and helps you decide what to keep and what to let go of.
One of my favorite parts of this book is that Becker goes deeper than decluttering and minimalism. In this book, he offers insight into why people have clutter and over-consume to begin with and helps you get to the root of the issue. If you only read one book about minimalism or decluttering, please let it be this one!
The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up by Marie Kondo
I know, I know, you are probably sick of hearing about this book or the name Marie Kondo any time someone mentions decluttering or minimalism. But, there is good reason for all the love. Come on, it isn’t called “life-changing” for nothing!
This was the first book I read about decluttering and it was the reason I kept learning and reading about it. This book is a great starter read for someone who is dabbling with the idea of decluttering their home. Kondo takes you through her back story and love of tidying up and gives practical tips for changing your home. Definitely a must-read! You might want to be her best friend when you are done reading. (No? Just me?)
Decluttering At The Speed of Light by Dana K. White
Okay, here’s the thing. You get yourself all pumped up, you are armed with trash bags and you are ready to declutter. Until you remember that you have work, homework, dinner, ballet class and dogs to walk tomorrow. How the heck are you supposed to fit decluttering into your busy schedule?
That’s where this book comes in! One of the things I love about this book is that it helps you implement strategies to finally get rid of the clutter, even when you don’t have a lot of time to do so. Let’s face it, most of us don’t have an entire week to focus only on decluttering. This book is wonderful for someone who is having a tough time carving out time for this process.
Another thing I love about this book, similar to Joshua Becker’s book, the author helps you to dig deep down inside yourself and figure out why you have let the clutter build up, what is standing in the way of your success and provides real life tips to finally say goodbye to clutter!
