I don’t know about you but my medicine cabinet seems to be a catch-all spot! Anyone else have this issue??

With winter right around the corner and the dreaded cold and flu season creeping up on us, now is the perfect time to get into your medicine cabinet and purge!!

There is nothing worse than thinking you have the medicine you need when someone is sick, only to reach in and find that it is expired. Or empty.

Or everything comes flying out. I know this, from experience.

But the good news? Decluttering and organizing your medicine cabinet doesn’t need to be hard or complicated. Since it is usually a smaller space, this shouldn’t take you a ton of time to accomplish and you will feel SO much better when you can see everything and find what you need.

Today, I am going to show you three simple steps that I used to declutter and organize my medicine cabinet and keep it that way! SCORE!

Step 1: Remove everything from the cabinet

When you are getting ready to declutter almost any space, the first thing I always tell someone to do is to take everything out and empty the space.

Regardless of the size of your medicine cabinet or how much is in there, take it all out. If you are in your bathroom, lay everything in the sink or on a counter.

While you are doing this, take stock of what you have. You can even start organizing everything into piles as you remove them from the cabinet. Kill two birds with one stone!

Step 2: Go through everything and toss anything expired, empty or old.

When it comes to your medicine cabinet, first and foremost, you want to get rid of anything that is expired. Dump the pills down the toilet or check and see if your town has a day/place where you can drop off old prescriptions for them to dispose of.

Check out this article from the FDA for more information on safely disposing of unwanted or expired medications.

Even if something hasn’t expired, but you can see that it is dried up, crusted or empty, this is the perfect time to get rid of it. Don’t even think about putting it back in the medicine cabinet just in case you can get one or two more uses out of it. Chances are, if you haven’t used it by now or if there really isn’t much left, you won’t need it.

Step 3: Put everything back in by category.

This is the fun part! (I am a loser, I know, but I love organizing & it makes me happy!)

Typically, when it comes to the medicine cabinet, I like to keep my daughter’s medicine separate from ours.

Have you ever woken up in the middle of the night and needed medicine for your kids and almost grabbed one of yours?

When you keep everything on different shelves, it makes life so much easier in those situations!

I also like to put hers on the top shelf so that she doesn’t reach them. She is 8 so I don’t worry as much anymore but I would rather be safe than sorry.

Each shelf is separated by category such as nose sprays, allergy medications, cold medicines, cough syrup, etc. I only have three shelves in my medicine cabinet so I put a little bit of room in between each category/type of medicine.

I know many people like to separate everything into bins and label them but for me, since I have such a small medicine cabinet, I don’t do this. I also don’t keep a ton of medicine, unless it is something specific, so that isn’t something I really need but it is definitely an option for organization!

Each quarter, as the seasons change, I go through and purge/organize the medicine cabinet! This ensures that it is always manageable and only takes me a few minutes each time I do it because I make it a priority!
